World Champion Mike Lee Wins PBR BFTS Sioux Falls, SD

Mike Lee once again proves why he has been at the top of the PBR BFTS, year after year. He is one of only a few professional bull riders who has been consistent in a sport that is considered to be the "toughest sport on dirt", qualifying for the PBR BFTS Finals 13 years in a row!

This win moves Mike to 15th place in the world. With the majority of the season remaining, there is lots of opportunity to move up the ranks to number one!

Mike Lee earned 530 points towards the PBR world standings.

According to PBR.com, more than 18,000 fans attended the first ever Sioux Falls, SD Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) event.  It was a sell out crowd both nights of competition as they cheered on the bull riders and bulls.

Mike took two of his famous, crowd pleasing lap around the arena.  When he makes the 8 second buzzer, he takes a victory lap.  This started back in the fall of 2013. After a great ride, he was naturally excited and took a lap to celebrate with the crowd.  The fans loved it and began to bring signs to the events that said things like, "Run that lap Mike", "Run Mike Run".  Mike is known for his love of his fans. He is usually the last one at autograph signings, taking extra time to meet the people who cheer him.

Mike and the PBR head to Albuquerque, NM for the next BFTS event on Mar 20-22. Be sure to watch it on line at pbr.com/live or on CBS, CBS Sports Network.

Mike Lee Ends the Year in Seventh Place at PBR World Finals

Mike Lee rode the rankest bull, Bushwacker, for a 2.13 second ride at the 2014 BFTS World Finals.  He ended the season in seventh place out of 35 bull riders who made it to finals.  This ride was the last one in Bushwacker's legendary career.  On an article at the official PBR website Lee said that it was an "honor" to be the last person to ride him.

Mike Lee at Round Two of PBR World Finals, Las Vegas

As a PBR bull rider, you never know what is going to be thrown your way.  While training methods will prepare a rider for what he may or may not experience, when the chute opens, there’s no guarantee of the outcome.  What makes Mike Lee such an excellent rider is that he has the experience and determination to take each moment as it comes and react accordingly – no matter what happens.

For Lee, round two of the PBR world finals was a perfect example of this.  Although he injured his shoulder his wife, Dana Lee, says, “Mike Lee is OK.  Has a sore left shoulder, but his head is OK.  Thank you God for keeping him safe!”

Moving into round three tonight, Lee has picked I’m Your Huckleberry to ride.  Be sure to watch the live event on CBS sports at 9 p.m. ET or the online live streaming at www.pbr.com/live

Mike Lee Comes out in Top Three at Bulls on the Beach

Taking the 15 best riders in the world and pitting them against the 15 best bulls in the world on October 18th in an arena set in “Surf City” Huntington Beach, California was a battle that proved to be everything it was anticipated to be.

Mike Lee came out in 3rd place that weekend with 81.25 points on Ridin’ Dirty No Restraint.  This was the bull’s BFTS debut.  For achieving third-place, Lee also gained an additional 160 point bonus that closed the gap for the 2014 World Finals in Las Vegas.

Dana Lee shares how her husband responds to his big win in Thackerville, Ok.

Mike has never been one to brag about himself. When we first started dating and I’d ask how a bull riding went it was either one of two answer “good” or “not good I bucked off all my bulls”. Being a man of little words I quickly realized that “good” could mean a variety of different things. One of them being WINNING an event.

I will never forget the first time he said he did “good” and when I asked him what place he finished he told me “uh first”. I was so excited for him but so confused at the same time because if I won I’d be jumping up and down with joy wanting to yell it from the rooftops! But Mike had it figured out long before I did.

Mike is the most humble man I have ever met and proves this to me on a daily basis. He is quick to thank God for his wins but hardly ever will admit that he won an event or even did well at it because he feels like it would be bragging on himself. There is only a handful of times I can remember Mike calling me excited to tell me that he won an event or did good. After you get to know Mike you realize that just because he doesn’t jump up and down and shout it from the rooftops doesn’t mean he is any less excited!

Winning this past weekend in Thackerville was a great blessing for Mike and there are no words to express how happy it makes me to see him up there in front of everyone thanking God for his blessing. Watching Mike ride has become one of my favorite things to do. To see him do something he loves and be able to cheer him on while he does it is amazing for me. To watch his dreams come true is a dream come true for me.

When I asked Mike on the drive home how it felt to win he said “Good, really good. God really blessed me tonight.” He said he hoped he could win another one this year too. And I believe if he stays healthy he will! For now he’s just taking it one bull at a time and one event at a time.

Through the Summer with Mike Lee and Family

Fun traveling on the road!
This summer run was a lot of fun. My family got to come with me a great deal and I got back to just me and my family and riding bulls. It seems to help me ride better when it’s nothing else other than just me and the love of bull riding. Then everything else just disappears.

I put on two bull riding schools this summer one in Lane, OK and one in Mission, SD. The one in Lane OK called the Lane Frost Memorial Bull Riding School. I have been doing it for several years now and this year was a good year. Plenty of kids and several that were really motivated to ride and learn. We all went running up and down the gravel roads in the Oklahoma hills and a few of the kids even beat me back to the arena. It was a great few days and I got to see a lot of talent in these students. I hope the school had an impact on them because I push them hard and make them think outside of the box and push them out of their comfort zones. And not just an impact in bull riding but in other parts of their lives too.

Putting up tepees with the Lakota Tribe

The school in Mission South Dakota was for the Lakota Tribe there. It was a lot of fun getting to learn about their culture and the family that put on the school. It’s really pretty country there with great people who took care of me and my family like they were their own. We got to work a lot on the horses, more than I normally do, because of their natural ability to ride a horse. And believe it or not if you can ride a horse trotting around bareback in a round pen with no hands for 8 seconds then you can probably ride a bull.

Lancaster, CA event.
Mike won it and got 2nd and 3rd place
riding all six of his bulls.
I got on a lot of bulls this summer. Decatur was good event and California was really fun. I got to get on Bushwacker and he felt really good and really fun. In the past he hadn’t felt that good because I was out of time, but it seems to be easier to believe it’s possible now. God is helping me believe that things are possible. Not because I deserve them but because I trust and have faith in his plan for me. It seems to be that sometimes you quit trying to hold onto everything, you just let it go, and trust in your instincts and live bull by bull and day by day and there seems to be more freedom in that and more fun.

Mike Lee and Brendan Clark

Salinas, CA PBR event.

This summer I pushed myself to the limits by entering several times at each event. This might not be for anyone else but it really helps me. When I get exhausted and I don’t have anything else left in my tank is when I find out who I really am. Things slow down and I feel alive.

Calgary Stampede Down Time

I got to spend time with my son Peter who is 7 months old and just kind of getting to watch and be with a baby again makes you kind of slow down and think about life. Think about “what am I living for?” And if everything was taken away from me, if my money, my bull riding, my family were all taken away then what is it if you lose everything that you live for?

It comes to mind that we’re all going to lose everything. We’re all going out the way we came in, naked and with nothing, just as my son peter did. I’m kind of experiencing the world in his eyes. It just makes you slow down and think what am I riding for? What am I living for? And at the end if you have no faith and no hope to meet your maker, and to meet Jesus, it makes no sense. All this work, all this effort, good, bad, what is it for? What is it worth? Without God without our maker then it seems pointless. And when things are pointless I lose hope.

This summer I found my hope again, and my belief that things are possible. I had told my wife I was feeling anxious this summer about a particular bull, it was a really good bull and there was a lot of pressure and I was getting a little bit of anxiety about it not wanting to mess it up. My wife turned towards me and said “that’s good, enjoy that feeling, enjoy the pressure, enjoy the moment. Don’t run from it, don’t try to escape it, take it all in, feel it, let it come over you. Bask in the greatness of that moment and rejoice in the mere fact that you get to experience it! Take note of how hard you worked to get there and how blessed you are to be there. Those are the moments to live for, the moments that you will remember the most. You tried your hardest and you didn’t let the fear take away your faith in the gift that God has given you.” When my wife told me that God whispered in my ear “just let it go and trust your instincts.”

Sometimes I forget I have a Father in heaven and that he leads my paths. As long as my spirits right I can trust and have hope and belief in things that seemed impossible. Sometimes I just have to remember to try to just enjoy the moment.

Mike Lee VS Bushwacker Results

It was a long night for Mike Lee.  He rode six bulls Wednesday night, the last being Bushwacker.

The first bull of the night caused Mike to strain his groin, but he kept on going, bull after bull, riding each one with dedication and heart.  Besides God, his wife and kids, and family, there is nothing that Mike would rather be doing, than riding those bulls.

The crowds and fans went wild as World Champion Mike Lee climbed on World Champion Bushwacker.

No one has ridden Bushwacker eight seconds since last August when JB Mauney rode him.

Even the bull's owner, Julio Morenas, said that Mike was a great match up for Bushwacker. Bushwacker could really show just how good he was with a rider of that caliber.

Mike went through his usual routine as he got his rope on the bull and slid forward.  Mike loosens up his body and then nods his head to open the gate.

The crowd in the stands went wild while the fans at home screamed and cheered, (my family being part of that online crowd).  Mike stayed on Bushwacker longer than anyone else so far this season.

5 Seconds!

Which is a victory in anyone's eyes considering the bull!

While it wasn't the eight seconds Mike wanted, he walked to the chute with a huge grin on his face and proud of the 5 he held on.

Mike Lee Still On a Roll!

Summer in the PBR brings more action as Mike Lee travels the country, riding at events and teaching at bull riding schools.

Currently, the Lee's are in Mission, South Dakota teaching bull riding to another eager bunch of cowboys.

The beginning of June you could find Mike and the entire family at the Lane Frost Memorial Christian Bull Riding and Bull Fighting School.

Mike, Dana, Teri, and the kids had a great time working with the young people who came to learn the ins and outs of bull riding and bull fighting. They got the students on horses, steers, mini bulls, and bulls as well as learning physical training and spiritual training.

The students all had a great time riding, learning, interacting with Mike, Frank Newsom, and the Frost family.

One of the highlights of the school is when Elsey Frost comes out to share the story of her son, Lane Frost.  Many hearts were touched and changed as they heard his incredible story.

Mike always looks forward to working with his bull riding students and even said he thinks he may see a few of these bull riders in the future!

Mike Lee is still leading in a sport where he has become a legend.  He remains in the top five bull riders in the world.  His recent wins in Decator and Asheville are not a surprise to anyone.  All his fans are thrilled to see him continue to excel in this exciting sport.

According to his wife, Dana, Mike is on a roll.  She said everything in his life is in the right place and going great.  She knows he has what it takes to take the world finals this fall and she looks forward to cheering the loudest in the stands the entire way there!

“I think he can do anything, as long as he stays healthy and believes in himself, he has the ability.”  Dana said.  She went on to share that the family is trying to help him focus on eating right, exercising, stretching his muscles daily, and remaining positive.

“He loves riding. He is getting on 6 or 7 bulls a weekend and still loves it.  He looks forward to it every week.” She continued to share.

He isn’t the only one!  With his thousands of fans, we all are right there with them, cheering him on and looking forward to every event.

With the Iron Cowboy and The American this weekend, what's on Mike Lee's mind?

Mike Lee continues to be in the top two this season in the Built Ford Tough Series with the PBR. His success isn’t short term - it is something that has been consistent since he got on his first bull at the age of 10.
Terry Good, photographer

I asked him how his leg feels after being stepped on by a bull in the Kansas City, MO, event last weekend.  He told me it’s fine and wasn’t hurt bad at all – just a little strawberry on it.

I put him on the spot and asked him for a quote.

“What about?”

“I don’t know. How ‘bout something you’ve never told anyone before!”

We both laughed as he is used to my crazy antics. I wanted to know what was on his mind going into the grueling weekend of The American and Iron Cowboy Events in Texas, and he came back with something thoughtful and heartfelt, just like I expected this man of faith and compassion would.

“Lately, I am really enjoying life. I’m really enjoy my family and riding bulls. You’d think riding bulls would get old by now, but it’s not. I really look forward to doing it. I cherish every moment. You never know when Jesus is gonna come. I’m just in that kind of mindset lately.”

Notice Mike laughing hard in the background.
Shae Smith loved the ride, but said his bull riding
career is over after his one and only ride.

Mike and I laughed as we talked about the time my husband got on one of his bulls and was bucked off. We enjoyed staying with him and his family for a month in 2010.

One of the most ironic moments of our stay with him was on our last night there. My son, Gabriel, put in his PBR Wii game and chose the player on the game named “Mike Lee”. It was wild watching the real Mike Lee play himself on the PBR Wii game.

When Chicken on a Chain was the next Wii bull for “Mike Lee” to ride, the real Mike Lee told us he had always wanted to ride him. We watched him take on that infamous bull like it was real life. Mike made sure the game was on the hardest setting and he played round after round with Gabriel. It was beyond awesome.

Mike is a real cowboy with a heart bigger than the state of Texas that he loves.

Terry Good, photographer

He not only loves to bull ride, but he loves family, people, and Jesus.
