Preparing for PBR BFTS 2017

Mike has been hitting the gym almost every day at  Fit N Wise  in Decatur, Texas.  Staying fit and flexible are keys to the kind of athletic ability it takes to be a top 10 bull rider in the PBR.

This is Mike's 16th year competing in the top level of bull riding - the prestigious PBR Build Ford Tough Series, which is a record.

PBR Albuquerque NM 2016



PBR Albuquerque, Mike earned 155 pts in the BFTS event, ending up in 6th place for the weekend. 
Rd. 1 - 2nd place on Cowtown Slinger 87.25 pts. 
Rd. 2 - 3rd place on Come on Baby, 87 pts.

 Mike is currently in 16th place in the world. Great job Mike!

 Next weekend, Mike Lee will be heading to the PBR BFTS event in Sioux Falls, SD. He won the event last year and is looking forward to the same opportunity this year.

Dana Lee brings us up to date on the past few months and 2016 season!

Tonight is the official kick off of the 2016 season and it couldn’t come at a better time! I

think Mike was going stir crazy these past 2 weeks not getting on bulls. While some take the

break as a time to heal up that’s never Mike’s plan. He loves riding and tries to go to as many

events as he can.

The weekend after finals was his start of the 2016 season and he’s attended every event

he could since then. I’m happy and thankful to say that Mike has stayed healthy through the

break and done an amazing job at the events he’s attended!

Watching him ride during this break I saw a resurgence in his love of riding and he

looked so happy being on top of those bulls. I’m not sure that I can put into words the joy you

feel watching someone you love do something they love to do and being truly at peace with it.  I

am so thankful that God has put this into his life and that I am lucky enough to get to watch him

experience it!

I am so excited for this next season and what it has in store for our family.  As some of

you know Peter has officially turned 2 years old which I still can’t believe myself! Where has the

time gone?! So this next year me and Peter won’t be able to travel with Mike to every event like

we have for the past 2 years. While I’m excited for this next chapter in our lives Peter and I both

will miss being at every event cheering Mike on in person. But that doesn’t mean that we’ll cheer

any less louder from home!

Praying for all the riders, bull fighters and livestock to have a safe and healthy 2016

season!

Dana Lee Reflects on 2015

Looking back on the 2015 season all I can say is that it was amazing! 

Peter and I got to travel all over the country (and sometimes out of it) to cheer Mike on while he got on the rankest bulls in the world. He got to be the last man to ride Asteroid. Had injuries, struggles and triumphs and victories. We met new friends that are now considered family. And spent almost two straight months on the road this summer traveling watching Mike do what he loves. 

While the finals didn't go as well as Mike had wanted God answered my prayers for his safety. By the end of the 2014 finals Mike was beat up, torn up, knocked out and stitched up.  But by the grace of God he made it through the 2015 finals without major injury or pain. After watching so many of our friends be hurt this finals and suffer not only the physical pain but mental pain of not knowing when and if they could ride again I feel like our family won the finals! 

The first event of the 2016 season starts this weekend Oct 30th and I'm so excited for what this season has in store for Mike! True to form he's going to go to as many events as he can and climb on as many bulls as they'll let him! And true to mine I'll be cheering the loudest whether I'm at the arena or watching from home on the couch!

Mike Lee wins at the PBR BFTS event in Sioux Falls, South Dakota!


World Champion Mike Lee Wins PBR BFTS Sioux Falls, SD

Mike Lee once again proves why he has been at the top of the PBR BFTS, year after year. He is one of only a few professional bull riders who has been consistent in a sport that is considered to be the "toughest sport on dirt", qualifying for the PBR BFTS Finals 13 years in a row!

This win moves Mike to 15th place in the world. With the majority of the season remaining, there is lots of opportunity to move up the ranks to number one!

Mike Lee earned 530 points towards the PBR world standings.  

According to PBR.com, more than 18,000 fans attended the first ever Sioux Falls, SD Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) event.  It was a sell out crowd both nights of competition as they cheered on the bull riders and bulls.

Mike took two of his famous, crowd pleasing lap around the arena.  When he makes the 8 second buzzer, he takes a victory lap.  This started back in the fall of 2013. After a great ride, he was naturally excited and took a lap to celebrate with the crowd.  The fans loved it and began to bring signs to the events that said things like, "Run that lap Mike", "Run Mike Run".  Mike is known for his love of his fans. He is usually the last one at autograph signings, taking extra time to meet the people who cheer him.

Mike Lee Comes out in Top Three at Bulls on the Beach



Taking the 15 best riders in the world and pitting them against the 15 best bulls in the world on October 18th in an arena set in “Surf City” Huntington Beach, California was a battle that proved to be everything it was anticipated to be. 

Mike Lee came out in 3rd place that weekend with 81.25 points on Ridin’ Dirty No Restraint.  This was the bull’s BFTS debut.  For achieving third-place, Lee also gained an additional 160 point bonus that closed the gap for the 2014 World Finals in Las Vegas.

Dana Lee shares how her husband responds to his big win in Thackerville, Ok.

Mike has never been one to brag about himself. When we first started dating and I’d ask how a bull riding went it was either one of two answer “good” or “not good I bucked off all my bulls”. Being a man of little words I quickly realized that “good” could mean a variety of different things. One of them being WINNING an event.

I will never forget the first time he said he did “good” and when I asked him what place he finished he told me “uh first”. I was so excited for him but so confused at the same time because if I won I’d be jumping up and down with joy wanting to yell it from the rooftops! But Mike had it figured out long before I did.

Mike is the most humble man I have ever met and proves this to me on a daily basis. He is quick to thank God for his wins but hardly ever will admit that he won an event or even did well at it because he feels like it would be bragging on himself. There is only a handful of times I can remember Mike calling me excited to tell me that he won an event or did good. After you get to know Mike you realize that just because he doesn’t jump up and down and shout it from the rooftops doesn’t mean he is any less excited!

Winning this past weekend in Thackerville was a great blessing for Mike and there are no words to express how happy it makes me to see him up there in front of everyone thanking God for his blessing. Watching Mike ride has become one of my favorite things to do. To see him do something he loves and be able to cheer him on while he does it is amazing for me. To watch his dreams come true is a dream come true for me.


When I asked Mike on the drive home how it felt to win he said “Good, really good. God really blessed me tonight.” He said he hoped he could win another one this year too. And I believe if he stays healthy he will! For now he’s just taking it one bull at a time and one event at a time.

With the Iron Cowboy and The American this weekend, what's on Mike Lee's mind?

Mike Lee continues to be in the top two this season in the Built Ford Tough Series with the PBR. His success isn’t short term - it is something that has been consistent since he got on his first bull at the age of 10.

I asked him how his leg feels after being stepped on by a bull in the Kansas City, MO, event last weekend.  He told me it’s fine and wasn’t hurt bad at all – just a little strawberry on it.

I put him on the spot and asked him for a quote.

“What about?”

“I don’t know. How ‘bout something you’ve never told anyone before!”

We both laughed as he is used to my crazy antics. I wanted to know what was on his mind going into the grueling weekend of The American and Iron Cowboy Events in Texas, and he came back with something thoughtful and heartfelt, just like I expected this man of faith and compassion would.

“Lately, I am really enjoying life. I’m really enjoy my family and riding bulls. You’d think riding bulls would get old by now, but it’s not. I really look forward to doing it. I cherish every moment. You never know when Jesus is gonna come. I’m just in that kind of mindset lately.”

Mike and I laughed as we talked about the time my husband got on one of his bulls and was bucked off. We enjoyed staying with him and his family for a month in 2010. 


One of the most ironic moments of our stay with him was on our last night there. My son, Gabriel, put in his PBR Wii game and chose the player on the game named “Mike Lee”. It was wild watching the real Mike Lee play himself on the PBR Wii game. 



When Chicken on a Chain was the next Wii bull for “Mike Lee” to ride, the real Mike Lee told us he had always wanted to ride him. We watched him take on that infamous bull like it was real life. Mike made sure the game was on the hardest setting and he played round after round with Gabriel. It was beyond awesome.



Mike is a real cowboy with a heart bigger than the state of Texas that he loves.

Mike Lee is in BFTS 1st Place after St. Louis PBR Event Feb 14-16

Mike Lee, once again, continues to show the world why he still has got what it takes to be a World Champion.

Since the 2014 Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Season has begun, Mike has consistently proven that he is one of the best bull riders in the world. With his success this weekend in St. Louis, he rises to 1st place in the BFTS, where he has been almost all season.

I asked Mike how it felt to be in 1st place and he replied, “God is good. I don’t have anything to do with it.”
He went on to say, “It is spooky being on top. It is hard as a Christian man because pride can sneak in real easy. I have to stay humble and I know that God is in control.”

“I just live for the moment. There is a lot less stress and that is what I am trying to do. When I get bucked off a bull, I am grateful because I learned something and I trust God. I don’t get angry like I used to. I’m tired of being stressed out.”

“I’m sick of the worldly way of thinking.”

I asked him if there was something he wanted to tell his fans and he gave me the answer I knew he would. 

Mike is a simple man with one thing on his mind, and that is Jesus.

“I just want to say I believe in Christ and what Jesus did on the cross. I am very appreciative and humble for the way God lived for us and died for us.”

I asked him how it feels to be a new daddy again.

“Pretty cool. He is a good baby. He likes to eat and is very healthy. He can’t go long without eating!” He shared that his wife, Dana, is doing great and they are both excited to have little Peter John Lee.
With Mike, his success isn’t based on a percentage or statistic.  He trains hard, prepares physically and mentally for each event, and tries to take each ride as it comes but he understands that he is in God’s will and completely trusts his future to Him.

The World Champion Mike Lee is a lot like the World Champion bull Bushwacker -
  •      If you take the bucking out of Bushwacker he would lose who he is.
  •      If you take God out of Mike Lee, he would lose who he is.

Bushwacker is retiring this year and when I cautiously brought up the subject of retirement with Mike he said,

“I don’t see myself retiring unless God tells me to.” He plans on riding bulls for years to come.


Mike shared with me that he knows talking about Jesus and God is not politically correct but that is what’s important to him and he wants to share it.  So, as I prepared this article I just couldn't separate the two in it.
